Description of 1st Prize – “Sailing Searching the Hostile Shore” by local artist Katharine Nix
This work was made in 2016 and short listed for the Lyn McCrae Drawing prize at Noosa Regional Gallery that year.
-
The white backing paper is handmade rag paper from cotton towels, by the artist.
-
The drawing is a combination of paper on paper, drawing and ink.
-
The black paper used was made from the inner bark of Hibiscus cannibinus, Kenaf, which was dyed.
-
The black paper is then formed extremely thinly and drawn into using a jet of water.
-
This negative drawing is then couched onto the white paper and when pressed and dried becomes one sheet to which further more conventional media, in this case ink, may be added.

The actual size of the drawing is 510mm wide x 740mm high and is framed.
