SCREENING AND PANEL: BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA @USC

About: Amnesty International USC and the USC International Relations Society are hosting the documentary 'Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea'. With an exciting panel of guest speakers from a diverse range of backgrounds, we will then discuss the documentary in light of the situation facing children in detention under Australian law.
The documentary is about the heartbreaking decision asylum seekers make to travel across the globe, putting their fate of their families in hands of strangers. Jessie Taylor and Ali Reza Sadiqi travelled across Indonesia and met with 250 asylum seekers in jail, detention centres and hostels. The story of the refugee is told through interviews, hidden camera footage and in the words of asylum seekers themselves.

About: A free community celebration of cultural diversity starting at 10:30am with a Welcome to Country followed by music on both the GLOBAL AND HARMONY STAGES from the Andes to Trinidad, dancer's from Hawaii to Colombia, global voices, the FESTURI Peoples Orchestra, storytelling, art and craft workshops in traditional woven fibre techniques from Papua New Guinea, henna tattooing, batik, Bollywood dance workshops, an Angklung orchestra from Indonesia, a Sacred Rhythms concert featuring Linsey Pollak, Tunji Beier, Ravi Singh and Sudha Manian. Our Children's Festival launches at 11am with (Hula) Hoop Jam, Singing for Kids, Pantastic Steelpan workshops, Mask and Juggling Ball Making, craft corner, face painting and more. Delight in our smorgasbord of tastes from around the world food stalls, street performance and non-stop entertainment as we sashay into the sunset to close with Trinidadian band: Alvin and D'Band Jahbutu at 5pm. Come and immerse your senses in our free open day of celebrating community diversity.

About the market Established in 2001 and famous for its magical country atmosphere. Around 20-30 stalls including food, fresh vegetables, honey, seedlings, home baking, jewelry, kombucha, self-published books, massages. Brick-a-Brac Lane for upcycled, recycled and second-hand goods. Some sites are odd-shaped, wonky, ideal for a stall-on-a-blanket. Sourdough wood-fired bakery. Café on the Deck We encourage: fair trade; hand-made by you; local produce; organic.

What: Come get your inner child play on, perhaps win some jelly beans, have your face painted, write and draw to asylum-seekers at Nauru, buy some arts and craft made by Young Buddies members, find some books for sale, get involved with Young Buddies through petition signing and join up as a member.
